Practice for family 4. Quizzes 13 to 16 explain each of these skills; this sheet is for doing them until they are quick. 150 problems in four parts, each section starting with its plainest version.

Part One

Reading decimals

Every place to the right of the point is a tenth of the place before it: tenths, hundredths, thousandths.

1.Place value

ExampleIn 45.382, the 3 is in the tenths place, the 8 in the hundredths, the 2 in the thousandths.

Name the digit.

  1. 1.In 96.631, which digit is in the thousandths place?
  2. 2.In 98.712, which digit is in the hundredths place?
  3. 3.In 145.296, which digit is in the thousandths place?
  4. 4.In 406.238, which digit is in the tenths place?
  5. 5.In 545.193, which digit is in the tenths place?
  6. 6.In 676.284, which digit is in the thousandths place?
  7. 7.In 679.868, which digit is in the tenths place?
  8. 8.In 864.784, which digit is in the hundredths place?
  9. 9.In 904.122, which digit is in the thousandths place?
  10. 10.In 913.516, which digit is in the tenths place?

2.Reading a decimal aloud

Say the whole number, then “and” for the point, then the digits after the point as one number, then the name of the last place.

Example3.07 is “three and seven hundredths.”

Write each in words.

  1. 11.Write in words: 11.882
  2. 12.Write in words: 14.1
  3. 13.Write in words: 18.7
  4. 14.Write in words: 22.606

  8. 18.Write in words: 36.5
  9. 19.Write in words: 47.5
  10. 20.Write in words: 55.15

3.Which is larger?

Give both the same number of places by writing zeros on the end, then compare.

Example0.7 and 0.65: 0.70 against 0.65, so 0.7 > 0.65.

Write > or < in the box.

  1. 21.3.3  □  3.33
  2. 22.0.717  □  0.25
  3. 23.0.906  □  0.4
  4. 24.5.645  □  5.186
  5. 25.1.57  □  1.7
  6. 26.7.827  □  7.9
  7. 27.4.082  □  4.7
  8. 28.0.91  □  0.8
  9. 29.8.21  □  8.8
  10. 30.6.82  □  6.34
  11. 31.9.8  □  9.204
  12. 32.7.71  □  7.522

4.Rounding

Look one place to the right of the place you are rounding to: 5 or more rounds up.

Example3.846 to the nearest tenth: the next digit is 4, so 3.8.

Round.

  1. 33.Round 116.0537 to the nearest hundredth
  2. 34.Round 130.6847 to the nearest hundredth

Part Two

Adding and subtracting

Line up the points, one under the other. Fill empty places with zeros.

5.Adding

Example4.5 + 12.37 = 4.50 + 12.37 = 16.87.

Add.

  1. 47.29.7 + 36.3

  10. 56.44.18 + 92.717
  11. 57.94.059 + 37.86
  12. 58.99.61 + 6.52

6.Subtracting

A whole number has a point at its end: 20 is 20.00.

Example20 − 3.45 = 20.00 − 3.45 = 16.55.

Subtract.

  1. 59.34.736 − 6.42

  6. 64.82.3 − 76.67
  7. 65.84.3 − 63.5
  8. 66.84.68 − 4.1
  9. 67.89.272 − 77.8
  10. 68.91.684 − 22.84
  11. 69.94.83 − 79.605
  12. 70.95.9 − 66.4

Part Three

Multiplying and dividing

Multiply as if there were no points, then count the places. To divide by a decimal, move both points until the one you divide by is a whole number.

7.Multiplying

Count the digits after the point in both numbers; the answer has that many.

Example0.4 × 0.06: 4 × 6 = 24, and 1 + 2 = 3 places, so 0.024.

Multiply.

  1. 71.0.19 × 0.33
  2. 72.0.5 × 0.18
  3. 73.0.6 × 0.21
  4. 74.0.86 × 0.7
  5. 75.0.89 × 0.11
  6. 76.0.45 × 2.8
  7. 77.5.2 × 0.3
  8. 78.6.7 × 2.4
  9. 79.7.2 × 0.08
  10. 80.0.2 × 15
  11. 81.0.89 × 29
  12. 82.0.19 × 35

8.Dividing by a whole number

Divide as usual and put the point straight above the point.

Example8.46 ÷ 3 = 2.82.

Divide.

  1. 83.2.54 ÷ 2
  2. 84.3.05 ÷ 5
  3. 85.4.45 ÷ 5

  9. 91.41.64 ÷ 6
  10. 92.54.64 ÷ 8

9.Dividing by a decimal

Move the point in both numbers the same number of places, until you are dividing by a whole number.

Example1.44 ÷ 0.12 = 144 ÷ 12 = 12.

Divide.

  1. 93.6.84 ÷ 0.36
  2. 94.9.5 ÷ 0.25
  3. 95.22.4 ÷ 0.64
  4. 96.35.72 ÷ 0.47
  5. 97.36.3 ÷ 0.55
  6. 98.38.22 ÷ 0.39
  7. 99.49.47 ÷ 0.97

  11. 103.263.2 ÷ 9.4
  12. 104.669.6 ÷ 9.3

10.Multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1,000

Each zero moves the point one place: right to multiply, left to divide.

Example3.7 × 100 = 370, and 3.7 ÷ 100 = 0.037.

Work each one out without a calculator.

  1. 105.10.101 × 1,000
  2. 106.25.17 ÷ 1,000
  3. 107.30.8 ÷ 10

  11. 141.Write 0.84 as a fraction in simplest form
  12. 142.Write 0.9 as a fraction in simplest form

13.Repeating decimals

A fraction in lowest terms gives a decimal that ends only if its bottom has no factors but 2 and 5. Any other factor, like 3 or 7, makes it repeat.

Example2⁄3 = 0.666… repeats, because 3 is a factor of the bottom.

Divide, and say whether it ends or repeats.

  1. 143.Write 1⁄3 as a decimal. Does it end, or repeat?
  2. 144.Write 2⁄3 as a decimal. Does it end, or repeat?
  3. 145.Write 1⁄6 as a decimal. Does it end, or repeat?
