Two examples

Example 1

From a notice: The boiler in the basement ______ repairs.Choices: need  /  needs  /  needing
  1. Each sentence in the passage tests one thing from Parts 1 to 5. First ask what this sentence is testing: the choices are forms of one verb, so it is agreement.
  2. Find the subject: boiler, one. In the basement only tells where.
  3. Singular subject, singular verb.

Answer: The boiler in the basement needs repairs.

Example 2

From a letter: My neighbors upstairs say ______ ceiling is wet too.Choices: there  /  their  /  they’re
  1. The choices sound alike, so this one tests confused words.
  2. The ceiling belongs to the neighbors: their.

Answer: My neighbors upstairs say their ceiling is wet too.
