Two examples

Example 1

We need ______ yeast.Choices: flour salt and  /  flour, salt, and  /  flour, salt, and,
  1. Count the items: flour, salt, yeast. Three items make a list.
  2. In a list of three or more, a comma goes after each item except the last, including before and.
  3. No comma goes after and.

Answer: We need flour, salt, and yeast.

Example 2

We need ______ pepper.Choices: salt, and  /  salt and  /  salt, and,
  1. Count the items: salt, pepper. Only two.
  2. Two items joined by and need no comma.

Answer: We need salt and pepper.
