Two examples

Example 1

Is every comma right? The list of rules, is on the wall.
  1. Find the subject and verb: the list of rules … is.
  2. The comma sits between them. A comma never goes between a subject and its verb.

Answer: A comma does not belong

Example 2

Is every comma right? When the bus came, I got on.
  1. The sentence opens with a dependent clause, when the bus came.
  2. A comma where the opening clause ends is exactly right.

Answer: Correct
