Two examples

Example 1

From a notice: The work is ______ however, it may take longer.Choices: planned for one day,  /  planned for one day;  /  planned for one day
  1. Each sentence in the passage tests one thing from Parts 1 to 5. First ask what this one tests: a transition joining two sentences.
  2. Between two sentences, however takes a semicolon before it.

Answer: The work is planned for one day; however, it may take longer.

Example 2

From a newsletter: The ______ raise is three percent a year. (all the workers)Choices: workers  /  workers’  /  worker’s
  1. The choices differ only by an apostrophe, so this tests belonging.
  2. All the workers: plural, ending in s. Add only the apostrophe.

Answer: The workers’ raise is three percent a year.
