Example 1

888 ÷ 24 =
  1. 24 goes into 88 three times (72), 16 left; bring down the 8: 168.
  2. 24 goes into 168 seven times (168), nothing left.
  3. Check: 24 × 37 = 888.

Answer: 37

Example 2

5,000 ÷ 23 =
  1. 23 goes into 50 twice (46), 4 left; bring down 0: 40. 23 goes in once (23), 17 left; bring down 0: 170.
  2. 23 goes into 170 seven times (161), 9 left.
  3. Check: 23 × 217 + 9 = 5,000.

Answer: 217 R 9
