Two examples

Example 1

Write as an ordinary number: 3.2 × 105
  1. The exponent is 5: move the point 5 places to the right, writing zeros to fill.

Answer: 320,000

Example 2

Write as an ordinary number: 4.7 × 10−3
  1. The exponent is −3: move the point 3 places to the left.

Answer: 0.0047
