Example 1

In 4x2 − 7x + 9, what is the coefficient of x?
  1. The coefficient is the number multiplied by the variable, with its sign.
  2. The x term is −7x.

Answer: −7

Example 2

In x2 + 3x − 8, what is the constant term?
  1. The constant is the number with no variable, with its sign.

Answer: −8
