Worked examples

Two examples

Example 1

Use the quadratic formula to solve: x2 − 2x − 8 = 0
  1. a = 1, b = −2, c = −8. b2 − 4ac = 4 + 32 = 36, and √36 = 6.
  2. x = (2 ± 6) ÷ 2: that is 4 or −2.

Answer: x = 4 or x = −2

Example 2

Use the quadratic formula to solve: 2x2 + 3x − 2 = 0
  1. a = 2, b = 3, c = −2. b2 − 4ac = 9 + 16 = 25, and √25 = 5.
  2. x = (−3 ± 5) ÷ 4: that is 12 or −2.

Answer: x = 12 or x = −2
