Worked examples

Two examples

Example 1

Solve the system: y = 2x and x + y = 9
  1. Put 2x in place of y in the second equation: x + 2x = 9.
  2. 3x = 9, so x = 3. Then y = 2 × 3 = 6.

Answer: (3, 6)

Example 2

Solve the system: y = x − 1 and 2x + y = 8
  1. 2x + (x − 1) = 8, so 3x − 1 = 8 and x = 3.
  2. y = 3 − 1 = 2.

Answer: (3, 2)
