Two examples

Example 1

Rewrite as an addition: 7 − (−2)
  1. Keep the first number, 7. Change − to +. Change the sign of the second number: −2 becomes 2.

Answer: 7 + 2

Example 2

Rewrite as an addition: 3 − 8
  1. The second number, 8, has no sign of its own, so it is positive.
  2. Keep 3. Change − to +. Change 8 to −8.

Answer: 3 + (−8)
