12 − 20 =
  1. Rewrite: 12 + (−20).
  2. First subtract: 20 − 12 = 8. The original larger absolute value is −20, negative.

Answer: −8

Example 2

7 − (−8) =
  1. Rewrite: 7 + 8.
  2. Same signs: 15.
