Example 1

2 14 + 3 12 =
  1. Add the whole numbers: 2 + 3 = 5.
  2. Add the fractions: 14 + 24 = 34.

Answer: 5 34

Example 2

4 23 + 1 23 =
  1. Wholes: 4 + 1 = 5. Fractions: 23 + 23 = 43.
  2. 43 is 1 13, so carry the 1: 5 + 1 = 6.

Answer: 6 13
