Worked examples

Two examples

Example 1

You buy 3 notebooks at $2.49 each and pay with a $10 bill. How much change do you get?
  1. Step 1, the cost: 3 × 2.49 = 7.47.
  2. Step 2, the change: 10.00 − 7.47 = 2.53.

Answer: $2.53

Example 2

Apples cost $1.80 a pound. How much do 2.5 pounds cost?
  1. Multiply: 1.80 × 2.5 = 4.500.
  2. That is $4.50.

Answer: $4.50
