Two examples

Example 1

Every side of a figure is multiplied by 3. Its area is multiplied by
  1. Area has two dimensions, each multiplied by 3: 3 × 3.

Answer: 9

Example 2

Every edge of a solid is doubled. Its volume is multiplied by
  1. Three dimensions, each doubled: 2 × 2 × 2.

Answer: 8
