Two examples

Example 1

The job requires lifting boxes, working weekends, and ______.Choices: to drive a forklift  /  driving a forklift  /  you drive a forklift
  1. Look at the shape of the items already in the list: lifting, working. Both are -ing words.
  2. Things that do the same job in a sentence should have the same shape.
  3. So the third item is an -ing word too.

Answer: The job requires lifting boxes, working weekends, and driving a forklift.

Example 2

You can either pay online or ______.Choices: by mailing a check  /  mail a check  /  a check by mail
  1. Pairs work the same way: whatever kind of words comes after either must come after or.
  2. After either: a verb and the words that go with it (pay online).
  3. After or: the same, a verb and the words that go with it (mail a check).

Answer: You can either pay online or mail a check.
