Example 1

From a notice: Fill a few pots with water, ______ and keep a jug in the bathroom.Choices: storing them in the fridge,  /  store them in the fridge,  /  they should be stored in the fridge,
  1. Each sentence in the passage tests one thing from Parts 1 to 6. First ask what this sentence is doing: it is a list of three things to do.
  2. Fill and keep are commands. The middle item should be a command too.
  3. Same job, same shape: store them in the fridge.

Answer: Fill a few pots with water, store them in the fridge, and keep a jug in the bathroom.

Example 2

From a letter: I reported it to the super on September ______ nothing has been done.Choices: 12,  /  12, but  /  12 but,
  1. Two complete sentences: I reported it / nothing has been done.
  2. A comma alone would be a comma splice. A comma before but joins them, and but fits: you expect a report to lead to a repair.
  3. The comma goes before the joining word.
