Two examples

Example 1

The box of tools ______ by the door.Choices: sit  /  sits
  1. The word right before the blank is tools, but that is a trap.
  2. Find the subject: what sits by the door? The box. Of tools only tells what kind of box.
  3. Cover of tools and listen: The box sits. One box, singular verb.

Answer: The box of tools sits by the door.

Example 2

The workers on the night shift ______ a raise.Choices: wants  /  want
  1. The word right before the blank is shift, one shift. Another trap.
  2. Who wants the raise? The workers, more than one.
  3. Cover on the night shift: The workers want.

Answer: The workers on the night shift want a raise.
