Two examples

Example 1

Neither the cooks nor the manager ______ on Sunday.Choices: work  /  works
  1. Two subjects joined by nor. With or and nor, the verb agrees with the subject nearer to it.
  2. The nearer subject is the manager, one person.

Answer: Neither the cooks nor the manager works on Sunday.

Example 2

Each of the tenants ______ a key.Choices: have  /  has
  1. The subject is each, not tenants. Of the tenants only tells which group.
  2. Each means one at a time. It is singular.

Answer: Each of the tenants has a key.
