Two examples

Example 1

______ open until six.Choices: Its  /  It’s
  1. One choice has an apostrophe. Read it as two words: It is open until six.
  2. That makes sense, so keep the apostrophe.

Answer: It’s open until six.

Example 2

The kids left ______ coats on the bus.Choices: there  /  their  /  they’re
  1. Try the apostrophe word as two words: left they are coats. No.
  2. There points to a place: left there coats. No.
  3. The coats belong to the kids: their.

Answer: The kids left their coats on the bus.
