  1. Ones: 8 + 5 = 13; write 3, carry 1.
  2. Tens: 6 + 7 + 1 carried = 14; write 4, carry 1.
  3. Hundreds: 4 + 3 + 1 carried = 8.

Answer: 843

Example 2

2,957 + 1,486 =
  1. Ones: 7 + 6 = 13; write 3, carry 1. Tens: 5 + 8 + 1 = 14; write 4, carry 1.
  2. Hundreds: 9 + 4 + 1 = 14; write 4, carry 1. Thousands: 2 + 1 + 1 = 4.

Answer: 4,443
