Example 1

15 − 8 =
  1. Count up from 8 to 15: 8 to 10 is 2, and 10 to 15 is 5.
  2. 2 + 5 = 7. Check: 8 + 7 = 15.

Answer: 7

Example 2

13 − 4 =
  1. Count up from 4: 4 to 10 is 6, and 10 to 13 is 3.
  2. 6 + 3 = 9. Check: 4 + 9 = 13.

Answer: 9
