Two examples

Example 1

You buy 3 shirts at $12 each and pay with a $50 bill. How much change do you get?
  1. Step 1, the cost: 3 × 12 = 36.
  2. Step 2, the change: 50 − 36 = 14.

Answer: $14

Example 2

A worker earns $18 an hour. She works 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. How much does she earn in a week?
  1. Step 1, a day’s pay: 18 × 8 = 144.
  2. Step 2, a week: 144 × 5 = 720.
