Two examples

Example 1

Which expression means “5 less than a number”?
  1. “Less than” turns the order around.
  2. Start with the number, x, then take 5 away.

Answer: x − 5

Example 2

Which expression means “3 times the sum of a number and 4”?
  1. The sum, x + 4, is a group, so it goes in parentheses.
  2. Then multiply the group by 3.

Answer: 3(x + 4)
