Two examples

Example 1

Find the value of 3x2 − 2x + 1 when x = 4.
  1. Put 4 in place of each x: 3 × 42 − 2 × 4 + 1.
  2. Powers first: 3 × 16 − 8 + 1 = 48 − 8 + 1.

Answer: 41

Example 2

Find the value of x2 + 5x when x = −3.
  1. Put (−3) in place of each x: (−3)2 + 5 × (−3).
  2. 9 + (−15) = −6. The square of a negative is positive.

Answer: −6
