Example 1

Simplify: 6x32x
  1. Divide the numbers: 6 ÷ 2 = 3.
  2. Subtract exponents: 3 − 1 = 2.

Answer: 3x2

Example 2

Simplify: x2 − 9x + 3
  1. Factor the top: (x + 3)(x − 3).
  2. The factor (x + 3) is on the top and the bottom, so it cancels.

Answer: x − 3
