Worked examples

Two examples

Example 1

Solve: 5x + 3 = 2x + 18
  1. Subtract 2x from both sides: 3x + 3 = 18.
  2. Then 3x = 15, so x = 5.

Answer: x = 5

Example 2

Solve: 4x − 7 = 6x + 1
  1. Subtract 6x from both sides: −2x − 7 = 1.
  2. Then −2x = 8, so x = −4.

Answer: x = −4
