Worked examples

Two examples

Example 1

Solve: 3(x − 4) = 15
  1. Multiply out: 3x − 12 = 15.
  2. Then 3x = 27, so x = 9.

Answer: x = 9

Example 2

Solve: 2(x + 3) = 4x − 8
  1. Multiply out: 2x + 6 = 4x − 8.
  2. Subtract 4x: −2x + 6 = −8. Then −2x = −14, so x = 7.

Answer: x = 7
