Two examples

Example 1

Is x = 4 a solution of 3x − 2 = 10?
  1. Put 4 in place of x: 3 × 4 − 2 = 10.
  2. It matches.

Answer: Yes

Example 2

Is x = −2 a solution of 5x + 1 = 11?
  1. 5 × (−2) + 1 = −9.
  2. That is not 11.

Answer: No
