Worked examples

Two examples

Example 1

A graph has an open circle at 3 and an arrow pointing right. Which inequality?
  1. The arrow points toward larger numbers: x is greater than 3.
  2. The circle is open, so 3 itself is not included.

Answer: x > 3

Example 2

A graph has a filled circle at −2 and an arrow pointing left. Which inequality?
  1. The arrow points toward smaller numbers: x is less than −2.
  2. The circle is filled in, so −2 is included.

Answer: x ≤ −2
