Worked examples

Two examples

Example 1

Solve: x + 5 > 2
  1. Subtract 5 on both sides. Subtracting never flips the sign.

Answer: x > −3

Example 2

Solve: −3x ≤ 12
  1. Divide both sides by −3.
  2. Dividing by a negative number flips the sign: ≤ becomes ≥.

Answer: x ≥ −4
