Example 1

Solve: 2x + 5 ≤ 17
  1. Undo the adding: 2x ≤ 12.
  2. Divide by 2: the sign stays.

Answer: x ≤ 6

Example 2

Solve: −2x + 3 > 11
  1. Undo the adding: −2x > 8.
  2. Divide by −2, and flip the sign.

Answer: x < −4
