Which is larger: −7 or −2?
  1. Picture the number line. −2 is 2 steps to the left of zero; −7 is 7 steps to the left.
  2. The number farther to the right is larger.

Answer: −2

Example 2

Which is larger: −3 or 1?
  1. Every positive number is to the right of every negative number.

Answer: 1
