Example 1

Name the case: 5 − 3
  1. The dash between the numbers is the operation: subtracting.
  2. The 3 has no sign of its own, so it is positive.

Answer: Subtract a positive

Example 2

Name the case: −5 − (−3)
  1. The dash at the very start belongs to the 5. The dash between the numbers means subtracting.
  2. The second number, in parentheses, is negative 3.

Answer: Subtract a negative
