Example 1

Which is farther from zero: −9 or 4?
  1. Look at them without their signs: 9 and 4.
  2. 9 is larger, so −9 is farther from zero, even though 4 is the larger number.

Answer: −9

Example 2

Which is farther from zero: 6 or −2?
  1. Without their signs: 6 and 2.
  2. 6 is larger.

Answer: 6
