Two examples

Example 1

|−9| =
  1. Absolute value is the distance from zero. −9 is 9 steps from zero.
  2. A distance is never negative.

Answer: 9

Example 2

The opposite of −14
  1. The opposite is the same distance from zero, on the other side: change the sign.

Answer: 14
