Example 1

What fraction of the shape is shaded?
  1. Count the equal parts: 8. That is the denominator, the bottom number.
  2. Count the shaded parts: 3. That is the numerator, the top number.

Answer: 38

Example 2

A bar is cut into 6 equal parts, and 4 are shaded. What fraction is shaded?
  1. 6 equal parts, 4 shaded: 46.
  2. It simplifies to 23; either answer is right here.

Answer: 46 or 23
