Worked examples

Two examples

Example 1

A recipe calls for 34 cup of rice. How many cups for 6 batches?
  1. The same amount 6 times over: multiply. 34 × 6 = 184.
  2. 184 = 4 24 = 4 12.

Answer: 4 12 cups

Example 2

A tailor had 5 12 yards of fabric and used 2 34 yards. How many yards are left?
  1. Taking away: subtract. Rewrite with 4: 5 24 − 2 34.
  2. Borrow: 4 64 − 2 34 = 2 34.

Answer: 2 34 yards
