Two examples

Example 1

There are 12 women and 9 men in a class. What is the ratio of men to women?
  1. The order of the words is the order of the numbers. Men are named first: 9.
  2. Then women: 12. It can be written three ways.

Answer: 9 to 12, 9 : 12, or 912

Example 2

There are 5 cats and 7 dogs at a shelter. What is the ratio of cats to all the animals?
  1. Cats first: 5.
  2. All the animals: 5 + 7 = 12.

Answer: 5 : 12
