Two examples

Example 1

The ratio of red marbles to blue marbles is 2 : 3. What fraction of the marbles are red?
  1. Every group has 2 red and 3 blue: 2 + 3 = 5 marbles.
  2. 2 of every 5 are red.

Answer: 25

Example 2

The ratio of adults to children on a bus is 3 : 5. What fraction of the people are children?
  1. Every group has 3 + 5 = 8 people.
  2. 5 of every 8 are children.

Answer: 58
