Example 1

Is 4 : 6 equal to 10 : 15?
  1. Cross-multiply: 4 × 15 = 60, and 6 × 10 = 60.
  2. The products are equal.

Answer: Yes

Example 2

Is 3 : 5 equal to 9 : 16?
  1. Cross-multiply: 3 × 16 = 48, and 5 × 9 = 45.
  2. The products are different.

Answer: No
