Example 1

Is y proportional to x in this table?

  1. Divide each y by its x: 6 ÷ 2 = 3, 15 ÷ 5 = 3, 24 ÷ 8 = 3.
  2. The ratio is always 3.

Answer: Yes

Example 2

Is y proportional to x in this table?

  1. 5 ÷ 1 = 5, 8 ÷ 2 = 4, 14 ÷ 4 = 3.5.
  2. The ratios are not all the same.

Answer: No
