Two examples

Example 1

I have ______ that movie three times.Choices: saw  /  seen  /  see
  1. Look at the word before the blank: have, a helping verb.
  2. After has, have, had, use the third form. For see, the three forms are see, saw, seen.

Answer: I have seen that movie three times.

Example 2

She ______ home at five.Choices: gone  /  went  /  go
  1. There is no helping verb before the blank. The verb stands alone.
  2. A verb standing alone, telling about the past, takes the second form: go, went, gone.
  3. Gone alone is a common mistake in speech (she gone home). It needs has or had.

Answer: She went home at five.
