Two examples

Example 1

I got to work early, and my boss ______ me to wait outside.Choices: tells  /  told  /  will tell
  1. The first verb, got, is in the past.
  2. Did the time change? No: both things happened the same morning.
  3. So the second verb stays in the past too.

Answer: I got to work early, and my boss told me to wait outside.

Example 2

I moved here in 2015, and now I ______ in Queens.Choices: lived  /  live  /  had lived
  1. The first part is in the past: in 2015.
  2. But the time words change: now. When the time really changes, the tense changes with it.

Answer: I moved here in 2015, and now I live in Queens.
