Example 1

Temperature of a cup of hot water as it cools01020304050607080901000510152025303540Time (minutes)Temperature (°C)Made-up numbers, for practice.
According to the graph, what was the temperature of the water at 20 minutes?
  1. Read the title, then the labels on both axes. The x-axis, along the bottom, is time in minutes. The y-axis, up the side, is temperature in °C.
  2. Find 20 on the x-axis.
  3. Go straight up from 20 until you reach the line.
  4. From that point, go straight across to the y-axis. The point is on the line marked 40.

Answer: 40 °C

Example 2

Temperature of a cup of hot water as it cools01020304050607080901000510152025303540Time (minutes)Temperature (°C)Made-up numbers, for practice.
According to the graph, at what time was the temperature of the water 30 °C?
  1. This time the temperature is given and the time is asked. You start on the other axis.
  2. Find 30 on the y-axis, up the side.
  3. Go straight across until you reach the line.
  4. From that point, go straight down to the x-axis: 30 minutes.
  5. The answer is a time, so it comes from the x-axis.

Answer: 30 minutes
