Worked examples
Two examples
Example 1
- A trend is the general direction of the numbers. Follow the line from left to right.
- From 0 to about 8 hours, the line climbs steeply: the number of yeast cells rises fast.
- After about 10 hours the line is nearly flat: the number hardly changes. It has leveled off.
- “It goes up the whole time” is close, but it misses the end, and the end is what the question tests.
Answer: It goes up, then levels off.
Example 2
- The steepest part of the line is where the change is biggest.
- From 0 to 5 minutes the temperature falls from 90 to 70: a change of 20 degrees.
- From 15 to 20 minutes it falls from 46 to 40: 6 degrees. From 35 to 40 it falls from 28 to 26: 2 degrees.
- The water cools fastest at the start, when it is hottest.
Answer: Between 0 and 5 minutes
