Physical Science

Matter, energy, and motion: chemistry and physics.

Physical science is the study of matter and energy. It is about four in ten questions on the test. It has two parts. Chemistry is about what things are made of and how one substance turns into another. Physics is about motion, force, and energy. Each page below is a reading of about fifteen minutes, with the words to know at the end.

Study guideChemistry 1: Matter, Atoms, and BondsMatter and energy; elements, atoms, molecules, and compounds; protons, neutrons, and electrons, and how to count them; electron shells and valence electrons; the periodic table; chemical formulas; and the two main kinds of bond, covalent and ionic. With an atom you can build electron by electron, and two bonds you can watch form, with narration.Study guideChemistry 2: Mixtures, Changes, and ReactionsMixtures and solutions; solids, liquids, and gases; density; physical and chemical change; chemical equations, and how to balance them; the energy in reactions, and what makes them go faster; acids, bases, and pH. With an equation balancer, a gas you can watch spread out, and a gas you can squeeze and heat.
