Two examples

Example 1

Fill in the sign: 4,072 ___ 4,027
  1. Both have four digits, so compare from the left.
  2. Thousands: 4 and 4, the same. Hundreds: 0 and 0, the same. Tens: 7 is more than 2.
  3. The sign opens toward the larger number.

Answer: 4,072 > 4,027

Example 2

Put in order, least to greatest: 3,510, 3,105, 3,501, 3,150
  1. All have four digits, and all start with 3.
  2. Hundreds: 1, 1, 5, 5. So 3,105 and 3,150 come first; their tens, 0 and 5, put 3,105 first.
  3. Then 3,501 and 3,510; their tens, 0 and 1, put 3,501 first.

Answer: 3,105, 3,150, 3,501, 3,510
