Worked examples

Two examples

Example 1

Round 4,762 to the nearest hundred.
  1. The hundreds digit is 7. Look at the digit to its right, 6.
  2. 6 is 5 or more, so round up: the 7 becomes 8, and every place after it becomes 0.

Answer: 4,800

Example 2

Round 3,962 to the nearest hundred.
  1. The hundreds digit is 9. The digit to its right, 6, is 5 or more, so round up.
  2. Rounding up a 9 makes 10: write 0 and carry 1 into the thousands, so 3 becomes 4.

Answer: 4,000
