Example 1

3 + 4 × 5 =
  1. Multiply before adding: 4 × 5 = 20.
  2. Then 3 + 20.

Answer: 23

Example 2

20 − 8 + 3 =
  1. Adding and subtracting are on the same level, so go left to right.
  2. 20 − 8 = 12, then 12 + 3.

Answer: 15
